Our Staff:

Frederick Harris, Psychotherapist / Owner. MA, MA, LPC, SAC, CFTP

When Frederick relocated to Madison, Wisconsin in 2017, he quickly recognized a significant gap in the availability of diverse mental health providers in Dane County. Many agencies delivered services through an ethnocentric lens, resulting in treatment approaches that were often color‑blind and insufficient for culturally diverse populations. To address the long‑standing under‑utilization of mental health services among minority communities—a persistent challenge in the behavioral health field—Frederick began offering low‑cost, self‑pay therapeutic services for children, adults, and families from marginalized backgrounds.

Frederick’s career began twenty years ago in Toledo, Ohio, where he served as a case manager in a maximum‑security prison. In this role, he provided services to incarcerated men of color, supporting rehabilitation and facilitating family reunification. His early work in the criminal justice system allowed him to serve a diverse population experiencing substance use challenges, mental health concerns, homelessness, complex family dynamics, major life transitions, and criminal behavior. Throughout his career, Frederick has developed restorative and rehabilitative programming, managed inpatient and outpatient services for individuals with co‑occurring disorders and provided clinical therapy to adolescents and adults across cultural, socioeconomic, and racial backgrounds. His direct, warm, and honest therapeutic approach has proven highly effective in building and sustaining meaningful therapeutic relationships.

As a person holding two marginalized identities—being a person of color and gay—Frederick brings a deep and personal understanding of multicultural issues, sexuality, and identity development. His lived experience forms a multidimensional therapeutic perspective, providing unique insight into the needs of clients navigating systemic and interpersonal challenges. His clinical training spans a wide range of treatment modalities, rooted in the belief that no single approach fits every individual. This flexibility allows Frederick to tailor treatment to the needs of clients with marginalized identities, many of whom seek therapists they can identify with, relate to, and feel safe with. Frederick is committed to building a team of providers who reflect the diversity and lived experiences of the communities they serve.

Frederick recognizes the many barriers that prevent individuals from accessing therapy—including affordability, limited access to culturally competent providers, and the stigma surrounding mental health. To address these obstacles, he provides culturally specific services and intentionally broaches topics related to race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexuality, and cultural background throughout the counseling process. By centering clients’ identities and acknowledging the intersectionality of their experiences, Frederick works to overcome barriers to culturally competent care and strives to ensure that each client feels validated, affirmed, and understood.
